The (European Banking Authority (EBA) Transparency Exercise) promotes transparency and market discipline within the EU financial sector. The data and tools provided by the EBA focus on individual exercise years. At Brainboard GmbH, we have developed complementary tools that integrate more than 12 million records from the Transparency Exercises spanning 2015 to mid-2024. This unique solution enables time series analysis and comparative evaluations of banks over time.
There are around 300 fields to choose from, which are divided into 14 categories. The tool provides additional possible selection options for each field (e.g. which are calculated here at the corresponding bank in the Standardized Approach - SA or Internal Rating-Based Approach - IRB) or balance sheet characteristics or country and type of exposure. Data from more than 125 banks is available. In total, around 80,000 characteristics of a bank can be called up and compared with each other or put into a chronological context (from 2014-12 to 2024-06). It is also possible to download the selected data.Currently, the following three tools are available:
Time Series Tool
The tool visualizes EBA data from end-2014 to mid-2024 and enables comparisons between multiple banks in a single view. Users can choose from various display options. Data can be shown as raw values, normalized to a baseline of 100, relative to risk-weighted assets (RWA), relative to capital, or relative to total assets. Additionally, the tool allows users to download time series data in JSON or CSV format.
EBA Landscape Overview
EBA Landscape Overview provides a concise yet comprehensive perspective on the banking sector under EBA regulation. It enables the analysis of key metrics and parameters for all regulated banks, with customizable periods and exportable data formats (JSON/CSV). This tool serves as an invaluable resource for understanding and exploring the EBA-regulated banking ecosystem.
Data Download Tool
The tool provides access to all data made available by the EBA, covering all periods and categories. Users can download complete datasets in JSON or CSV format for detailed analysis. Additionally, downloads can be customized to specific fields, periods, and banks, allowing for a more targeted and efficient data extraction.
Use Cases
The tools are designed to be user-friendly and provide a valuable extension to the existing EBA offerings. Users can explore trends and gain insights through an intuitive graphical interface, enabling them to visualize data over time and compare multiple banks. For more in-depth analysis, users can create custom downloads tailored to their selected banks and periods. Examples of how to use the tools can be found in the Use Case Section.
